What is The Compass & Rose Learning Collective?

~The Compass & Rose Learning Collective is a home based, tutor-led study hall designed give children time to review and build on academic and personal goals. With hands-on resources, time outdoors, and a collaboratively created lunch, children will be able to enjoy themselves as they work toward academic goals.

~In this model, children will bring curriculum items to review or extend skills. As a mastery level teacher, I am able to instruct in best practices while utilizing my hands-on resources to deepen knowledge of content. After working together for 30-40 minutes per content area, we rotate through hands on resources, collaborate to create lunch, and spend time outdoors-even on rainy days! This is all while giving positive reinforcement and encouragement to boost self-esteem and self efficacy.

Student centered lunches are designed to build autonomy and creativity while your child is in my home. Grilled cheese and tomato may be on the menu today and baked chicken and veggies, may be Thursday's pick!

Having an expert with expert resources goes a long way to ensure student progress. I am a licensed teacher and will work to help your child master material. With the perspective of a 25 year veteran, I am able to understand the prerequisite skills that are sometimes missed to approach mastery.

Manipulatives are an important component to content mastery. I purchased all tactile resources from phonics blend posters to hundreds beads to ensure your child has a concrete perspective of the content we review each day.

How does opening my home and heart lead to finding the direction of growth?

I am a wife and mom to 3 children. I have been an elementary teacher in a private, public, charter, and homeschool space. I have worked in rural, city, and suburban areas.

In 2013 I obtained a Master's in Education from the University of Mississippi in Educational Leadership and I have been grateful to work in education for  over 20 years.  All of these beautiful events have helped me to see that ALL children need to be affirmed and need good instruction to do well in life.

I have labored over the prospect of bringing children into my home to support the learning path of children for several years now.

This is because I take this work very seriously, and I truly believe that with my skills and patience, your little one will be able to accomplish the goals you planned this year!

This work also includes giving parents the ability to manage other spaces in their lives so that they can continue on the path of learning for their children. I want to contribute to 'making all things beautiful' for people who could use it. This warm and safe home is a place of joy for me and I would like to share this soul-affirming learning space with other families.

Look Like for Your Child?

9:00 Welcome! Classical music will be heard as you enter my home. As you get settled, I will look over your materials and announce today's lunch.
9:30 Begin working on reading content. When you finish, select a book from two decades of collecting resources. The books are organized by topic.
10:00 Spend some time with me in the skills I saw you working on earlier. I have phonics blending resources and rhyming examples for you to review today.
10:30 Let's take a break. Would you like to get some fresh air? I have a jump rope. Maybe you can set a new record!
11:00 Let's begin prepping lunch. Please wash the cucumbers and add the stripes with a fork.
11:30 Thank you for creating a lovely lunch. We will enjoy each other's community while we eat.
12:00 Let's clean up, thoroughly.
12:15 Let's take another break. We'll go outside and check on my garden.
12:45 You can spend some time in math. I know you were looking forward to fractions.
1:15 Since you are working on fractions, I thought we could show examples with play dough.
1:45 That was fun, we can pack up now.
2:00 I look forward to seeing you one more time this week!

  • I am very grateful for the work that Mrs. Holmes does with Arnie. In a few months, he went from C/D to A+! She is an awesome tutor. I am sure she will be great in this next season of her career.
